Jay also sent an 8" low pinion elocker for a 488 re-gear. |

Dis-assembly begins. |
Stripped 3rd was cleaned up and a coat of satin black applied. |
45 ft/lbs was verified on all 8 bolts. |
No burrs on the ring surface. |
The ring gear was a snug fit but the plastic hammer made it happen. |
Blue loctite and 70 ft/lb |
Carrier bearings pressed on at the same time here. |
This end is done. |
Large inner race tapped in place. |
Smaller outer race also tapped in place. |
A .077" shim will be the starter shim. |
Drive......slight shallow. |
Coast. |
Drive of the pinion tooth....says slight shallow also with the comet tail tucked in like that. |
.......................... |
............................. |
Taking apart to thicken the shim a bit. |
Pressing the pinion bearing off. |
Making a significant jump from 077 to 082. |
The press just takes all the work out of it.....couldn't imagine trying to do this with a chisel and hammer. |
Solid collar can go in now but first, have to finish my coffee. |
On the 2nd shim I found the sweet spot. |
Drive.....looks good. |
Coast.....looks sweet. |
Pinion looks good. |

So far, Marlin only sells an eco seal for the 27 spliners.....nothing yet for the 29 spline pinions. |
New flange goes in place. |
Hardened wasker and a new pinion nut. |
PPL measured at 10 in/lb. |
A ding and it will not loosen on its own. |
Carrier is installed now and tighten the four bolts to 70 ft/lb. |
Plenty of preload on the carrier bearings and backlash was measured on every other tooth. Backlash minimum was .006" |
Drive side.....a nice perfect depth pattern that favors the toe end. Some call it a competition pattern. |
Coast. Typical of many of the coast side patterns. |
Pinion looks great. |
blue loctite and 10 ft/lb. |
A snapshot of the final notes. |
Bang the 4 corners in....it allows this box to squeeze into the outer box a lot easier. |
Packing up the completed 3rd. |
Back to Canada. By the way, cost around 120 USD plus whatever the duty tax runs. |
