2 boxes received from Mike. The yellow bands are a nice touch. One is the rear and one is the front. |
|---|
| Well wrapped. The grey foam was the greatest cushion for the 3rd. |
| Michael's gear package product was also received from Just Differentials. |
Both of his Harrop elockers also arrived. Not a big fan of that electro-static popcorn stuff. |
These pics are also in the other main link. The 8" rear gears are in the group of 4. The gear in the lower right was a walk-in and is a Dana 60. |
| Cryogenics International is 30 miles from me but worth driving the distance. |
| Charles(owner) fabricates and sells these cryo chambers to numerous places....and overseas, too. |
| The brainbox....computer controlled interface between the LN2 line and the chamber itself. |
| 488 Nitro back from cryo and his "old" 373 gears ready to go under the knife. |

Being an 07 model and being that Mike lives in sunny California, it's just plain nice to work on a relatively clean, rust free 3rd. Skipped a few steps but here is the 373 pinion being pressed out. |
| This specialized seal tool easily removes the seal with maximum damage. |
| Original pinion races are pressed out. |
| The big inner pinion race is usually stubborn about staying straight..... |
| .....but it can be done. |
| Maybe it's the accessability but the outer race taps down very nicely. |
| 100% seated. |
| Going to try a typical .080" shim for the 1st try. |
| It's only a 12 ton but it's never let me down. |
| Time to mount up the ring....but first to check for any burrs or rough spots. All looked great. |
| Blue loctite and 70 ft/lb on all 10 bolts. |
| Carrier bearings are pressed on. |
| This end is all done. |
| Now to mount up the pinion into the 3rd. |
| Ready for the Harrop. |
| The 2 tabs interfere with the top bearing cap. |
| Just bend them a little to clear better. |
| And the cap fits properly. The wheel adjuster is the last thing to install by screwing it in. |
| Backlash is dialed in. |
| Drive side....pattern is good but slightly shallow. |
| Coast. |
| Drive...reverse painted. Agrees on the slight shallow. |
| Coast....reverse painted. |
| Comet tail is tucked in. |
| ................... |
| The usual disassembly and pressing the bearing off. |
| Only added .002" to the pinion depth shim and pattern is very good. |
| Coast even looks better. |
| Now to install the solid collar. |
| It took 4 tries but the collar is now properly shimmed. 1.865" final |
| The rubberized seal can be tapped on. |
| A thin coating of gear oil on all rubbing surfaces. |
| Final preload checked in at a nice 12 in/lb. |
| The play in the tabs was measured at 2 mm per the spec. |
| 70 ft/lb on the 4 bearing caps. |
| 20 inch/pounds for total preload....carrier bearing plus pinion bearings. |
| Backlash was measured on 20 teeth....every other tooth. .007" |
| 10 ft/lb and blue. |
| Final locker test. 2.94 amps. All looks good. |
| Dremel drill the data on the ring. |
| ...................... |
| Have to find some more of this dense 2" foam....seems to really cushion the 3rd. |
